Five Steps in Making a Moral Decision

When confronted with a moral choice, you must remember two things: you are free to choose how you will respond, and you are responsible for your choice.

In order to make a good and right choice follow these steps to form your conscience and act in a morally just way.

  1. Take time to think. Consider all the options and consequences. Consider the impact of your decision on yourself, others, and your relationship with God. Allow quiet time to let your conscience speak to you
  2. Consult and compare. Consult the sources of help and information: Bible, advice from others, Church teaching, gifts of the Holy Spirit. How does this information compare to your own personal reflection?
  3. Talk to others. Find at least one person who can understand your moral dilemma. Tell that person what you are thinking and why. Discuss the pros and cons and get their advice.
  4. Pray. Turn to the Holy Spirit for guidance.
  5. Act. Make your choice and be confident that you have made the best choice possible with your formed conscience.
