See the lines below from the Gospel of Matthew. These lines are taken from Jesus's famous Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 – 7)
"You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:13-16).
Beginning with the first line, assign one verse to each family member. Each person is to re-write the verse in words that are meaningful to him or her. Allow quiet time for reflecting, thinking, and writing.
When all are ready, read your re-written lines aloud to each other in their proper order. Discuss with each other what you were trying to communicate with your re-written lines.
Try the same activity with Paul’s famous passage about love in his letter to the Corinthians.
"If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.
And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.
And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated,
it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury
it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
