EMAIL from God

This exercise is designed to be done individually, but the results can be shared with family members or with one’s small faith-sharing group.

Read and reflect upon the following Gospel passage.

Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:34-41).

Imagine yourself as one of the “righteous” ones asking the questions, when did I give you food, or drink? When welcome you and give you clothing? When did I visit you? It might help to imagine that you are writing an email to God asking these questions.

Shortly after you hit the SEND button, a response arrives in your INBOX. What does the email from God say in response to your questions. Take some time to complete the message below:

Dear _[your name here]__
Thank you for your questions. They are good ones, but I am a little surprised you don’t already know the answers. Truly I tell you, just as you did these things to those who needed them, you did it to me.
For example, do you remember . . .
And perhaps you also recall . . .

And . . .

You are my beloved and I welcome you into my heart and my kingdom. God.
